Pete Rose, wife divorcing after 27 years (AP)

Court records show banned baseball star Pete Rose has filed for divorce from his wife of nearly 27 years. The 69-year-old Rose cited irreconcilable differences for the split, but his petition did not offer any additional details. A phone message left for his attorney, Joseph Mannis, was not immediately returned.

Belt homers in 5-run first inning as Giants beat
Brewers

Jeff Suppan pitched three scoreless innings against his former Brewers teammates for the second time this spring training, and rookie Brandon Belt hit a two-run homer as part of a five-run first inning Friday to lead a San Francisco Giants' split squad over Milwaukee 7-2 at Scottsdale Stadium. [view box score] [download the PDF press pass for this game]

Belt goes yard against Dillard.Suppan retired nine straight batters, allowing just one hit and striking out two in his first exhibition start.

Suppan is competing for the No. 5 spot in the Giants' rotation, which currently belongs to Madison Bumgarner.

Belt, the Giants' top prospect first baseman, hit his first homer of spring training in a five-run first. He also singled in the third and finished 2-for-4 with 2 RBI. Belt was in as the DH today.

Aubrey Huff, who played first base, had two hits and Mark DeRosa had a two-run double.

The other Giants split squad takes on the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, starting at 7:05 p.m.

Other notes:

  • According to Andrew Baggarly (San Jose Mercury News), Eli Whiteside (right elbow inflamm) could get a few innings behind the plate next Wednesday. He pinch hit in today's game against the Brewers.
  • Baggs also reports that pitcher Matt Cain (inflamed right elbow) plans to do some light throwing Saturday. He hasn't picked up a baseball in five days.

Rany Part 2 on the minors

I say this in the comments as well, but I'll mention it here: I think it may be possible that GMDM has actually outsmarted us all and actually embraced the concepts behind moneyball by identifying that prospects are currently overvalued and that actual major league talent is underrated.
