New York Mets left-hander Oliver Perez took another step toward returning from a right knee injury, allowing three runs in five-plus innings Friday night in a Triple-A rehabilitation start.
Perez gave up five hits and four walks while striking out four for the Buffalo Bisons. He threw 92 pitches, 46 for strikes, and delivered a first-pitch strike to only seven of the 23 Rochester Red Wings he faced.
Perez has said reaching 100 pitches in a rehab start was all he needed to rejoin the Mets' rotation.
Matt Macri hit a leadoff homer in the fifth against Perez, who allowed back-to-back doubles in the sixth before being replaced.
Perez is scheduled to return to the Mets for a start on Wednesday against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Add to myYahoo!Wang had an MRI after the game and according to Peter Abraham, he's headed to the DL with "a strain with bursitis. But everybody seems to think that he will be back within a month."
Back in 2005 Wang missed missed almost two months with right shoulder inflammation, but told reporters after the game that this pain was much less severe than the pain he felt back then.
It's a shame because Wang was finally starting to look decent. The Yankees will likely look to Triple-A for a replacement for the rotation. In I today's game thrementioned that I though Sergio Mitre would get a shot because he's been pretty good in for Scranton, Abraham also mentioned Mitre in the post linked above. Erik Boland also thinks Mitre will be the guy who gets the call.

The Mets (39-40) continue their weekend series against the Phillies (40-37) today at Citizens Bank Park. Fernando Nieve (3-1, 2.25) takes the hill for the Mets, while Jamie Moyer (6-6, 6.05) opposes him for the defending World Champions.
Game time is 4:05 PM EST, and will be broadcast nationally on FOX. Follow the game live online via MLB.com's Gameday application.

Mets' Lock & Key
Lock: David Wright will have a solid day at the plate against old-timer Jamie Moyer.
Key: Fernando Nieve must keep the Mets in the ballgame, unlike Livan Hernandez did last night.
The spot is yours for now, Fernando. Redding is in the bullpen, so prove Jerry right for sticking with you over Redding for the #5 spot in the rotation. With Ollie set to come back next Wednesday (I never thought I'd be so happy for him to return, either), Fernando and Livan must step their game up.
I have a hunch Nieve will be okay today, giving up only two or three runs in six innings of work. A rested Mets bullpen will come in and shut down the Phillies for a big 5-3 win.
Of course, I've been wrong before... Happy 4th of July, and LGM!

Add to myYahoo!Manny Ramirez's first home run since returning from a 50-game drug suspension wasn't enough to help Los Angeles overcome Everth Cabrera's three RBIs as the San Diego Padres beat the Dodgers 7-4 on Saturday. Ramirez homered in his second game and fifth plate appearance back. It was his seventh homer of the season and 534th [...]

Add to myYahoo!I'm off in ND, visiting with family and hopefully, we're enjoying some beautiful weather. The Twins have kind of limped through the first half of the season sitting barely above .500. (I'm writing this before Friday's game as I'm probably not going to have access to The Internets while I'm in ND.)Let's see [...]

The Giants' starter last night, Ryan Sadowski, needed to be introduced. Tim Lincecum needs no introduction. Last season's Cy Young winner has pitched as well, if not better in 2009. He is 1-0 against the Astros in his career, compiling a 2.13 ERA in four starts. Russ Ortiz did good work against both Edwin Jackson and Zack Grienke in his last two starts so he definitely doesn't get intimidated by the opposing starter.
