Game 80 Recap: Braves 3, Nationals 5

Photo

More photos » by Nick Wass - AP

What a way to ruin a Saturday. That game was won. Tommy Hanson pitched brilliantly, 3 hits, 1 walk, 5 strikeouts, and only one real mistake to Adam Dunn. But Mike Gonzalez just didn't have it today. The Braves have to start realizing earlier when Gonzo is not sharp and get him out of the game before the damage is too deep to erase.

The Braves took advantage of several scoring opportunities early in the game with some key hits, but they also grounded into 4 double plays, 2 each from Prado and Escobar. Those ended up coming back to hurt us in the end. Moylan got a ground ball that should have been the end of it in the eighth, but it found a hole.

It's not worth going into detail about all the what-if's in this game. Just know that we should have won it 3-to-1 and given Hanson his fifth win. It was in the bag and we blew it.

1986 Donruss Vince Coleman

1986 Donruss Vince ColemanI picked up this Vince Coleman 1986 rookie card at the same time that I grabbed this one. While the 1985 Topps Traded rookie card captures Vince in a way that I will always remember him while on the field, the ‘86 Donruss card was not a bad pick-up either.  The photo is [...]

Ramirez hits first HR since suspension (AP)

Manny Ramirez needed only five plate appearances before hitting his first post-drug suspension home run. It wasn't enough to help Los Angeles overcome 22-year-old rookie Everth Cabrera's three RBIs and brilliant defense as the San Diego Padres beat the Dodgers 7-4 on Saturday. Ramirez homered in his second game back from his 50-game suspension for [...]

Morneau has 4 hits, Twins top Tigers 4-3 (AP)

The ball sprung from Magglio Ordonez's bat and landed in the seats to give the Tigers the lead, and Francisco Liriano's head and shoulders dropped as fast as one of his 88 mph sliders. Liriano fought to finish that seventh inning, though, just as the Twins did following a draining 16-inning defeat the night before.

Moyer ties Hubbell by beating Mets 4-1 (AP)

Jamie Moyer fooled hitters with slow stuff, painted the corners and got outs the same way he's been doing it for 23 years and 600 starts. Moyer pitched neatly into the seventh inning, Jimmy Rollins hit a two-run double and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the New York Mets 4-1 on Saturday. "I really haven't figured [...]

Injury Update: No timetable for Reyes, Pagan
coming back

According to the TCPalm.com, Jose Reyes has been in St.Lucie working out.

Reyes arrived Wednesday and has been taking batting and fielding practice, and was seen jogging on the team?s training facility backfields. He appeared to be in good spirits Thursday, sticking around to chat with Gulf Coast League Mets manager Julio Franco ? and others ? after his workout.

Reyes, 26, has not played for New York since May 20, when he took himself out of a game in Los Angeles after aggravating a right calf injury. He then tore a hamstring tendon during an extended spring training game here on June 3 and following that setback he returned to New York.

Mets vice president of media relations, Jay Horwitz said Thursday ?there is no timetable? on how long Reyes will remain here or when he will be ready to play in a game. Reyes told the New York Times on Saturday he was still ?a long way? from running at full speed.

Meanwhile, outfielder Angel Pagan, who is recovering from a right groin injury, is getting closer to his return from the disabled list. Pagan said he is going through a series of tests to determine if he can be cleared to begin a rehab assignment with either the Gulf Coast League or St. Lucie Mets.

Pagan was batting .333 in 42 at-bats before his latest injury. He missed most of last season with a torn labrum in his left shoulder and started this season on the disabled list after undergoing surgery to remove a right elbow bone spur.

?I feel like a million bucks,? Pagan said Thursday. ?I?ve been working out great, and I feel better than the first time when I got hurt (and came back). I?m very positive I will stay healthy this time.?
