Yankees recall Traber, option Gonzalez to
Scranton (AP)

Lefty reliever Billy Traber was recalled from Scranton-Wilkes Barre on Friday by the New York Yankees, who optioned infielder Alberto Gonzalez to the Triple-A team. Traber had a 5.59 ERA in 9 2-3 innings over 14 games in two stints with the Yankees this season, in April and June. The 28-year-old was 2-1 with a [...]

New York Yankees reliever Brian Bruney allowed one run and two hits over two innings in his first minor league rehab appearance Friday since hurting his right foot in April. Reid Brignac Promoted

A scout told me Brignac projects as Stephen Drew with "More power, less OBP", something which makes my head hurt when you consider Drew's .295 OBP this season. He also said Brignac won't cost you any runs at shortstop but isn't necessarily above average when compared to other six holers.

PECOTA has Brignac at .238/.296/.405 this season, an OPS of .701 which puts him between supposed offensive juggernauts Julio Lugo and Derek Jeter, not too shabby for a 22 year old. The top comparisons are Brandon Phillips, Pokey Reese, and Kelly Johnson thrown in. Really all of his comparisons are all over the place, for every Carlos Beltran there's a Nic Jackson, and with a player this young it's really hard to judge his future.

Brignac would seemingly be able to stick at shortstop long term, but my question is will his bat hold up? His home/road splits favor Durham strongly, including a large jump in OBP which seems a bit odd. Brignac should get most of the playing time over Ben Zobrist for the next two weeks and could force his way into a starting job.

Game 88: Reds vs Nationals

Next Game

Washington Nationals

Great American Ball Park

Jason Bergmann vs Bronson Arroyo

Mostly cloudy with a 60-percent chance of rain. Winds blowing in from left field at 5-10 m.p.h. Game Time temperature: Around 75.

Complete Coverage >

W-L ERA WHIP K BB 2008 - Jason Bergmann1-54.261.325515

W-L ERA WHIP K BB 2008 - Bronson Arroyo5-76.191.678835

Rain might be a factor today, which is a shame since it's the 4th of July and all.  It'd be nice if Bronson could follow up his last start against the Indians with more of the same.  The bad news on Bergmann is that he hasn't given up more than one earned run in any of his last three starts.  The good news is that the Nats have still managed to lose two of those three starts.  He doesn't walk too many hitters, so aggressiveness at the plate may not be a bad thing.  Hopefully the Reds can make a dent off of this right-hander.

Happy Independence Day everybody (except for Gray)!  Be safe!  Don't go blowing any fingers off with firecrackers.  You need them for typing!

Bronx Banter: Wish You Were There

I often felt like I was being jipped when I was a kid. Whatever I had, it never seemed to be enough. Didn't have enough presents, stuff, didn't get enough attention, not unless I was acting the fool. It's part of the territory when you are a twin, I suppose. So I often was envious of the "things" that my friends had--a t-shirt, or a pair of sneakers, a book or a guitar. I remember my friend Matt Cantor being at Yankee Stadium twenty-five years ago when Rags threw his no-hitter against the Red Sox. Normally, it would have been just the kind of thing that had me green with envy. I don't recall much about that day--I'm sure I watched the game, but I don't have a clear memory of it. What I do remember is feeling happy that Matt got to see it in person. At that point, Yankee pleasures came in small doses, and this was surely an unexpected surprise--the great Wade Boggs stuck out to end the game no less. I was not jealous that I wasn't the one at the game, I was just excited that someone I knew was there. Hey, if it wasn't me, might as well have been Matt, who a die-hard Yankee fan.Twenty-five years ago. Jeez. Think I'll go change my diaper now and put in my teeth.
