After a rousing 16-run outburst against the Mets on Sunday night, the Yankee offense was ineffective again on Monday in Cleveland. Jason Giambi hooked a 3-2 breaking ball into the right field seats in the first inning against southpaw Jeremy Sowers for a two-run dinger and that was all the scoring the Yanks would do as they fell to the Tribe, 5-2. Generally speaking, if you haven't heard of the pitcher before, chances are they've got a good shot at beating the Yanks. Chien-Ming Wang wasn't his usual sharp self, but he wasn't awful either. This was a night where he needed the bats to help him a little something and it just didn't happen.

Add to myYahoo!"There's not much you can tell a kid who has pitched as well as he has," manager Mike Scioscia said. "He's done a terrific job, but he's not a finished product. He can use this time to clean some things up."...
"I figured it was going to happen," [Jered] said. "I've got to stay positive, take it in stride, keep doing what I'm doing and work hard to get back up here."
...
"It's kind of a strange feeling," Jeff Weaver said. "There's no reason for it, other than there's a player coming off the disabled list. Jered is kind of the odd man out."
"One thing about playing in the middle of the infield is that he has to be able to get in position to turn a double play and not worry about covering so much ground," farm director Terry Collins said. "He wants to make double plays and still cover a lot of ground. Even the greats have to give up something to do something."
Kazuhito Tadano got the loss, though he technically pitched ascoreless inning and two thirds. I likedTadano's story about coming back after being blackballed by Japanesebaseball following an incident in a porn film; in fact, it was oneof the first things I wrote about when I started this blog twoyears ago. He's no longer with the Indians organization, and the A'shave him; outside of his adventures with the Angels, I wish him allthe luck in the world.2006-07-03: Tulsa 9, Arkansas 4 # Bacon: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K

The 66ers made four errorsthat resulted in five unearned runs crossing the plate; Inland Empirestarter Chad Fillinger got chased in the fifth after giving up sixruns. Add to myYahoo!this sounds a lot like sour grapes:
"That wasn't a true steal of home," said Wills. "[Cabrera] saw that Chad wasn't watching and took advantage. That's not a true steal of home and I know what that is, Al Campanis taught me how, there's a technique to it. The timing has to be perfect, with the primary lead and secondary leads."Maybe, maybe not. All I know is that Cabrera scored a run uncontested.

Add to myYahoo!Jered Weaver is 5-0, allowing only a single run while striking out nine over seven innings of work, walking only one batter. Outstanding!
Cabrera got a hit, extending his on-base streak to 60 straight games. Also, outstanding!
The Angels scored a lot of runs, though not necessarily while Weaver was on the mound, and off King Felix, to boot, though Hernandez hasn't been lights out much this year.
Napoli walked twice, Vlad had a pair of hits, and Kendry Morales had a 3-4 day at the plate at the 136 AB mark, including his first homer since June 25. I won't call it a turning point, but I will suggest that he is learning. Anderson actually worked a couple of walks, and that must have caused his head to implode.
Izturis is back to being a liability and probably shouldn't be hitting second. I'll be glad when McPherson comes back.

Add to myYahoo! And I'm kind of glad I did. Seriously, what the hell? Losing by ten runs to the Yankees...okay, I'm not real happy about it, they're our arch-nemesis and all, but at least they're the Yankees. Losing by ten runs to the Pirates? At home? TO THE FUCING PIRATES? I'm not sure the word exists for how unbelievably unacceptable this is. I don't want to say too much about it, since I missed the game, but...wow. It's becoming clear to me that a starting rotation made out of paper clips and glue is not going to last long-term. I'm not sure there are words for what happened today, and if there are, none of them are good.
Tom Glavine faces Zach Duke tomorrow at 1:10. They better win tomorrow, that's all I'm going to say.
