Pettitte helps Clemens defense in perjury trial
(Yahoo! Sports)

WASHINGTON (AP) Andy Pettitte, the reluctant witness who was supposed to bolster the government’s case against Roger Clemens, appears to have instead substantially aided his former teammate and friend when he readily conceded he might have misunderstood their conversation about human growth hormone.

Gartrell Goes Deep Twice, Skinner Hits A Bomb,
And Teheran Has A Solid Rain-Shortened Start in Wednesday's Atlanta Braves Minor League Action

Gwinnett split a doubleheader with Gartrell homering in each game, Mississippi was postponed due to rain, Lynchburg lost despite a decent start from Northcraft, and Briceno got hammered for Rome despite a good day at the plate from Skinner.

Gwinnett Braves 7, Columbus Clippers 4 - Game 1

This is the continuation of the game that was suspended last night. Teheran started the first portion of the game and went 3 strong innings, allowing only 1 run on a solo homer while striking out 4. After play resumed, Buddy Carlyle took the mound and tossed 2.2 innings of 1 run ball with 2 strikeouts. The big pitching story for the game is that Cory Gearrin was finally scored on. Gearrin gave up his first run in his 14th inning of work in the International League. Not too shabby. On the offensive side, Stefan Gartrell had a big game, going 3 for 5 with his second homer of the year. Maybe this will get Gartrell going, as he had been hitting an anemic .164 before this game. J.C. Boscan and Jose Constanza each had a two hit game, and Luis Durango reached twice and swiped his 11th base of the year.

Gwinnett Braves 2, Columbus Clippers 3 - 7 innings, Game 2

  • Stefan Gartrell, DH: 2-4, HR(3), .205
  • Jose Yepez, C: 1-3, SB(1), .265
  • Joey Terdoslavich, 3B: 0-3, 3 K, 3 E(7,8,9), .206
  • Eric Junge, SP: 6 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 3.10 ERA
Eric Junge pitched a six inning complete game for the G-Braves in a close loss to the Clippers. Junge didn't pitch terribly, scattering 5 hits and 3 walks over 6 innings, but was done in by his defense that allowed 2 unearned runs. Joey Terdoslavich had a nightmare game, whiffing all three times he was at the plate and making three errors in the field. He now has 9 errors already and is barely keeping his batting average over the Mendoza line. Stefan Gartrell continued his good work from the first game, homering again.
Yohan Flande takes the mound on Thursday against the Clippers.

Mississippi Braves @ Mobile BayBears - SUPSENDED
Seems the Braves just can't shake the bad weather. Mississippi was rained out after 2 and this game will be resumed from the point it was stopped tomorrow. Sean Gilmartin will get the call in game two looking for his first win of the year.

Carolina Mudcats 5, Lynchburg Hillcats 2
  • L.V. Ware, CF: 2-5, CS(3), .182
  • Tommy La Stella, DH: 1-4, 2B, .353
  • Aaron Northcraft, SP: 5 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 2.57 ERA
  • Chasen Shreve, RP: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 1.88 ERA
Aaron Northcraft got the start for Lynchburg today and was pitching out of jams all evening. Despite allowing 9 baserunners in 5 innings, Northcraft only allowed 1 run. He then gave way to Ronan Pacheco who promptly blew the game, giving up 3 runs (2 earned) in an inning of work. Lynchburg was unable to get much going on offense either, though L.V. Ware did have himself a two hit day, and Tommy La Stella hit a double. On the year, La Stella is getting on base at a .463 clip, and has walked 11 times against only 3 strikeouts in 79 PAs - an absurdly good number.
Cody Martin toes the rubber tomorrow for the Hillcats.

Rome Braves 5, Hagerstown Suns 10
  • Will Skinner, DH: 2-4, HR(2), 2 RBI, 3 R, .278
  • Elmer Reyes, SS: 1-3, 2 RBI, .232
  • Rafael Briceno, 4.1 IP, 8 H, 7 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 5.14 ERA
  • Wilson Rivera, RP: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, 1.80 ERA
It was an ugly one for Rome tonight, as Rafael Briceno got absolutely rocked by Hagerstown. Briceno lasted only 4.1 innings and surrendered 7 runs on 8 hits and 3 walks. He allowed 3 homers, and had 4 steals against him. Cole Rohrbough got hammered in relief as well; the only R-Brave who managed a scoreless outing was Wilson Rivera in the 8th. Will Skinner had a good night at the plate, going 2-4 and clubbing his 2nd home run of the season in what was otherwise a very lackluster night in Rome.
David Filak looks to continue his strong start as he takes the mound tomorrow.

Fish Cap: Marlins 3, Giants 2

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - MAY 02: Emilio Bonifacio #1 is congratulated by teammate Jose Reyes #7 after Bonifacio scored on a fielders choice gound out against the San Francisco Giants in the first inning at AT&T Park on May 2, 2012 in San Francisco, California. Attendance: 41, 575

Hero of the Game: Emilio Bonafacio (WPA: 0.11)

Goat of the Game: John Buck (WPA: - 0.07)

Play of the Game: Jose Reyes stabbing catch at a line drive in the bottom of the eighth which could have ignited a real rally for the Giants.

Last night (or earlier Wednesday morning for those of you out east), it was the Marlins who predominantly shut down the Giants along with finding a way with defeating Giants star pitcher Matt Cain. Tonight, it was the Marlins coming out early with two runs, but the supreme pitching didn't belong to the home team this time -- it was Carlos Zambrano's night to shine.

Zambrano went seven strong innings, not allowing any runs on five hits while striking out five and walking three Giants.

Even though Big Z had a great outing, closer Heath Bell once again just could not shut the door giving the Giants a wide-open chance to tie things back up in the 9th.

If you're keeping score at home, that's four blown saves for Bell and three of those four have cost Zambrano a win. Not a good combination to have, and especially when they're both new to the team.

It was all smooth sailing for the Marlins throughout the first eight frames. They scored early meaning the Giants had a little more pressure to place runs on the board.

The storyline for the Giants was quite similar. Barry Zito has had some ups-and-downs throughout his career on the other side of the Bay, but this season has been a little different. Despite giving up the two runs early, Zito calmed down the Marlins bats from the third inning on, and so did the San Francisco bullpen.

Giancarlo Stanton cleaned things up in the 10th inning with a screaming hotshot over the left field fence over surrogate Giants closer Santiago Casilla.

Scott Cishek took care of the rest in the 10th retiring the Giants quietly giving the Fish a second straight win.

The Marlins and Giants will go at it again later this afternoon at 3:45.
