Add to myYahoo!Esmerling Vasquez.. That's the pitcher from the margins that the Twins are trotting out today to make his first Major League start. After having spent the last three seasons pitching mostly ineffectively out of the pen in Arizona, the 28-year-old was miraculously turned into a serviceable Triple-AAA starter in Rochester. I'm sure his advanced years and Major League experience had nothing to do with that.
Regardless, Vasquez will surely embarrass the Royals today, likely resulting in the Twins' 11th win against the Royals. That is 11 of what would be 56 at the end of the day, or 19.6% of their win total coming against the Royals.
Luis Mendoza--Esmerling Vasquez without the K-rate--will take the mound for the Royals. This will be a bloodbath. A WAR, if you will.

Add to myYahoo!A+ Modesto: L 3-2 (73-65, t-1st)
Good Tyler Matzek was on the mound last night for Modesto, as he worked six scoreless innings, allowing four hits and two walks while punching out seven. However, the bullpen was unable to get him a win, as Geoff Parker gave up a couple of runs in the seventh and Chad Rose allowed a walk-off homer.
Jared Clark accounted for all of the Nuts' offense with a two-run home run in the first inning, his 24th of the season. Brett Tanos had two of the team's four hits.
AA Tulsa: W 6-2 (73-64, 2nd, 3.5 GB)
Joe Gardner was at it again on Saturday, pitching seven scoreless innings without giving up a walk, lowering his season ERA to 3.97. He allowed six hits, struck out three, and induced 10 groundouts compared to just five flyouts.
Corey Dickerson hit his 13th Double-A homer, and his 22nd overall. Mike Zuanich, Kiel Roling, and Lars Davis also homered, while Nolan Arenado went 3-for-5 with a couple of runs scored.
More recaps after the jump...
AAA Colorado Springs: W 10-9 (74-68, 2nd, 5 GB)
Despite their pitching staff allowing 18 hits, the Sky Sox were able to escape last night's game with a victory thanks to 12 of their own hits. Charlie Culberson led the charge with four knocks, while Wilkin Castillo had three and Matt McBride and Brendan Harris had two apiece. McBride also hit his 40th double of the season.
Edgmer Escalona continued a solid season in AA, as he pitched a scoreless fourth inning to lower his ERA to 2.93. Dan Merklinger, who started the game, tossed three scoreless innings as well. Coty Woods had another rough outing, allowing five hits and three runs without retiring a batter. He'll have the chance to work out the kinks during Arizona Fall League play.
A Asheville: L 2-1 (86-52, 1st)
Alex Gillingham came up on the wrong side of a pitchers' duel in Hagerstown on Saturday, as he took the loss despite only allowing one run on four hits in seven innings. He struck out two, walked two, and maintained a 10-to-3 GO/FO ratio.
The Tourists had only five hits, but one of them was Trevor Story's 43rd two-bagger of 2012. Ryan Casteel also doubled, as well as walked twice and drove in Asheville's lone run.
A- (SS) Tri-City: L 7-6 (32-44, 3rd, 5 GB)
The Dust Devils dropped a 13-inning marathon, which featured 31 combined hits, to Salem-Keizer. A whole host of Tri-City players had two hits in the game, most notably Rosell Herrera and Francisco Sosa. Everyone in the lineup had at least one hit except for Miguel De Leon, who went 0-for-7 with five strikeouts.
Chris Dennis (2 IP, H, 4 K) and Trent Blank (3 IP, 2 H, 3 K) stood out on the mound for the Dust Devils in a game in which most of the other pitchers had a rough go of things.
RK Grand Junction: L 12-3 (39-32, 2nd, 1.5 GB)
Matthew Carasiti had an interesting day on the mound, as he allowed 11 runs on 10 hits in 2.2 innings. However, only six runs were earned, largely due to the fact that the GJ Rockies committed seven errors - four of which were charged to Ashley Graeter, and three of which were made by Juan Ciriaco.
Chris Cowell led the offense with four hits, while Correlle Prime had two, including a home run - his first of the season.

Marlins Park
Get out the broom breakers, because the Miami Marlins are trying to bust up a sweep.
After being one strike call away from finishing off a 3-2 victory, the Marlins took yet another heartbreaking ninth-inning loss, 5-3 to the New York Mets. This afternoon, the rubber game comes with Mark Buehrle on the mound trying to bust up the sweep versus Chris Young of the Mets.
Pitching MatchupNo more projected ERA, as at this stage, ZiPS has only a few starts left for each pitcher, and at that micro level, the numbers get a little wonky. Last time Buehrle pitched, the Marlins won and he had a solid yet unspectacular start that luckily did not feature a home run. The last time Chris Young pitched against the Marlins, he allowed three home runs, including two big ones to Giancarlo Stanton. The Marlins are hoping for more of the same results from both pitchers.
Lineup
GIANCARLO STANTON IS BATTING CLEANUP!
Manager Ozzie Guillen finally did the right thing and returned Stanton to the top of the lineup, and all is suddenly right with the world.
Notes
- I will be here for the early part of the game, but my girlfriend will be coming into town to visit for Labor Day weekend, so I will be checking out early. I also won't be on the game thread for tomorrow's afternoon Labor Day showdown versus the Milwaukee Brewers, sadly.
Bold Prediction: Marlins def. Mets 5-2
