Royals Roster Shuffling: Royals add Guillermo
Moscoso, lose Blake Wood

147179050

The Royals did some 40-man roster shuffling today, claiming two players off waviers - catcher Brett Hayes from the Marlins and right-handed pitcher Guillermo Moscoso from the Rockies. To make room on the 40 man roster, the team lost reliever Blake Wood off waivers to the Cleveland Indians. The Royals also designated for assignment right-handed pitcher Jeremy Jeffress, left-hander Tommy Hottovy and outfielder Jason Bourgeois.

Brett Hayes is a twenty-eight year old right-handed hitting catcher from the Marlins organization. He has spent parts of four seasons in the big leagues, hitting .202/.229/.254 last year in 118 plate appearances. He hit better in 2011 as the primary backup, hitting .231/.294/.405 in 130 plate appearances. He has never hit much in the minor leagues ever and appears to be a glove man, although he has only thrown out 26% of would-be base-stealers at the Major League level.

Guillermo Moscoso will turn twenty-nine years old in a few weeks, and has bounced around quite a bit in his short Major League career. Originally signed by the Tigers out of Venezuela, he was dealt to Texas in the Gerald Laird deal. After a few cups of coffee in Texas, Moscoso was sent to Oakland for minor leaguer Ryan Kelly and posted a terrific 2011 season. That year he was 8-10 with a 3.38 ERA in 21 starts, although he had just 5.2 strikeouts per nine innings. Last winter, the A's shipped Moscoso and pitcher Josh Outman to the pitching-starved Rockies for Seth Smith, and Moscoso stumbled badly with a 6.02 ERA, making just three starts and twenty-three appearances overall.

Moscoso throws in the high-80s, breaking 90 on occasion, with a mediocre slider and changeup. He's an extreme flyball pitcher, so its no surprise he thrived in Oakland and stumbled in Colorado.

Blake Wood is a twenty-seven year old right-handed reliever, originally a third round pick by the Royals back in 2006. He was quite useful in 2011, posting a 3.75 ERA in 55 relief appearances, striking out 8 per nine innings. He missed all of 2012 after Tommy John surgery. Wood is arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter.

The Royals also activated pitchers Felipe Paulino and Danny Duffy from the 60-day disabled list as a procedural move (you cannot be disabled if there are no games being played). These moves put the Royals at the maximum for the 40-man roster.

Around the SaberSphere 11/2: Rick Ankiel, Free
Agent Value, the Mets Front Office

143578326

Grant Brisbee of Baseball Nation explains why he wants Rick Ankiel to try his hand at pitching one more time: Please, please let the Rick Ankiel rumor be true - Baseball Nation

Except this would trump it. Rick Ankiel pitching again would be the most remarkable comeback in recent baseball history. It would be a remarkable comeback to bookend what was already a remarkable comeback. We forget about that part because it wasn't as remarkable as it might have been. Before Ankiel got popped for performance-enhancing drugs, he looked like he could be a future All-Star. But he still became a good bench player. The odds were stacked against even that.

Carson Cistulli of FanGraphs releases this year's free agent projections from the contract crowdsourcing series: Contract Crowdsourcing 2012-13: Results | FanGraphs Baseball

After each player’s respective name and position are rounded values for years and total projected contract value — represented as Yrs and Tot $, respectively. After that, are four related numbers: the decimal versions both of years and average-annual value (written as Yrs and AAV) and the standard deviations of both data sets, too (listed as Ystd and Astd, respectively).

Dave Cameron used those results to make a list of the top-25 free agent values on the market: The 25 Best – and Five Worst – Free Agent Values | FanGraphs Baseball

Here at FanGraphs, we’re not giving you a slideshow. We’re not giving you a Top 50 Free Agent list either, because, to be honest, my list would have looked an awful lot like Tim’s, and probably an awful lot like Keith’s. I just didn’t see a lot of usefulness in telling you that I agree that Zack Greinke and Josh Hamilton are the two best free agents on the market, nor was I super interested in trying to draw a distinction between Carlos Lee and Carlos Pena. They’re both not good anymore. Does anyone really want to read about those guys today? Me either.

Will Woods of Baseball Prospectus discusses the Mets fanbase, David Wright, R.A. Dickey and more: Baseball Prospectus | Head Games: David Wright, R.A. Dickey, and What Smart Fans Really Want

Obviously, it’s the front office’s job not to be overly conscious of these sentimental reasons for making personnel moves. It’s their job to either pay those stars and try to back into a wild-card berth, or blow the whole thing up and shoot for the moon with prospects. They should know that tightening their belt with Reyes only to turn around and pay Wright and/or Dickey doesn’t lead anywhere

Also, the writers at Royals Review give us their varying opinions on the Ervin Santana trade: Santana Roundtable - Royals Review

It is an indictment of Dayton Moore that the Angels' number five starter, at best, immediately becomes the Royals' number one starter.

Schilling calls suit political, denies wrongdoing
(Yahoo! Sports)

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling on Friday called a lawsuit brought against him by Rhode Island economic development officials ”political” and denied wrongdoing in connection with a $75 million state loan guarantee the state gave his failed video game company, 38 Studios.
