The Marlins took the lead in the first thanks to Hanley's double and Cantu's single. This would soon be erased when Big Game Andrew decided it was time to make the game a bit more challenging and started walking in runs. And if that wasn't enough, and to me it was, the Brewers scored again in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. Things were looking bleak for the hometown Marlins until the sixth when a blast from the past trotted in from the bullpen -- Jorge Julio. And he did not disappoint. Julio put on one impressive showing, you know, like the ones he did for us.
Jorge Julio 0 IP, 2 H, 5 R, 1 BB, 2 HBP.
It almost brought tears to my eyes walking down memory lane. When Julio finished doing what maybe only Julio can the Marlins had the lead 7-4 and never looked back.
It was so nice of Jorge to finally bring a smile to the fans of the Marlins.

Add to myYahoo!Take it as a bromide that importunings about an opponent's failed youth movement will backfire. The Snakes pitched well, and won despite being outhit by the Dodgers 9-5. The Dodgers suffered from an impossible five wild pitches, breaking the previous Los Angeles Dodgers record set on April 9, 1999 against Colorado, when Darren Dreifort and Dave Mlicki uncorked four wild pitches.
This was supposed to be about the return of Hiroki Kuroda, and he pitched well enough for a maiden trip to the mound after a rehab stint. Mercifully, he wasn't responsible for any of those wild pitches, but he also justifiably got tagged with the loss after only surrendering two runs. The Dodgers had leadoff men on second in the third and fourth and weren't able to get them over in either case. For the best offense in the league, it was a pretty pitiful poor outing, though the thrilling ninth inning rally almost made up for it. Had the oddly deployed Brent Leach not surrendered an insurance run in the eighth, the game would have gone to extras, and the Diamondbacks might not have broken their seven-game losing streak at Dodger Stadium dating back to last year.

Add to myYahoo! The Orioles kicked off their West Coast road trip with a shutout over the Seattle Mariners last night, 1-0.
Well, the story of the night was the pitching as Rich Hill got the win by throwing seven shutout innings, Jim Johnson pitched a perfect eighth inning, and despite throwing three straight balls to start the ninth, George Sherill earned the save.
The night for Hill started off shaky as he allowed a leadoff double to Ichiro Suzuki, and issued three walks before the fourth inning, but he settled in, and retired the final 14 batters before he was pulled. After his crazy start against the Blue Jays, last night's start was a wonderful thing to see and shows the future can indeed be bright for the Orioles if the starting pitching ever gains consistency.

Add to myYahoo!Kuroda looked good velocity and movement wise, hitting 93 consistently with an 83 mph change. However, he struggled with control a bit while trying to knock the rust off. Or, as Badger would put it, “he’s serving belt high lollipops.” He ran his pitch count pretty high early with 45 pitches in two innings, 32 of those in the second inning. It’s that second inning wildness that killed him. The two walks that inning came in to score on the double by rookie Josh Whitesell.
Overall a good start for his first game back since opening day. He exceeded Torre’s pitch count mandate by one, going 86 pitches in 5 innings with 2ER/3Hits/3Walks/6Ks.
It just seemed like this was a tough luck game, many balls were hit hard but every time we got something going we lost it. I feel like the team looked a bit fatigued after the late night traveling that went on. Kemp took a seat in the dugout between his outfield warm-ups and his turn in the cage before the game. The other media members in the booth were tired, so you know the players were too. But neither Torre or anyone else would admit that is what was wrong tonight.
Buckner had a career game tonight and was locating well with all of his pitches. It didn’t hurt that our offense has been stuttering as of late, with the exception being last night.
We outhit the Diamondbacks 9-5 but lost 3-3 as the Diamondbacks did a good job taking advantage of situations. It’s what good teams do; problem is that the Diamondbacks are not a good team this year. The Diamondbacks also walked only two which is not easy against this Dodgers team. We left 9 on base while the Diamondbacks stranded 7.
Tony Pena came on in the 9th bringing the gas at 96-97, and he looked really jacked up tonight. Fortunately we were able to sit on the heat and put the wood on the ball.
With an Ethier single, error on Kemp’s grounder, and Furcal’s RBI single we manufactured a run. Furcal went 2 for 2 on the night, a good sign. And with Pierre’s RBI single following a long out by rookie Jamie Hoffman we pulled within a run with 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth. But Loretta lined out to left to end the game and saving Pena’s face for his first save.
Casey Blake looked good before the game taking ground balls and going through running drills with the trainer. He was taking grounders at about half speed and was careful when running but I imagine he will be ready to start for the weekend series. He may even start before then judging by the fact that Torre used him to pinch hit tonight. The good thing is that the Dodgers can afford to take their time with injured starters because of the great backups available!
You know, I have heard many managers note that depth on the bench and good pitching are what helps make a championship caliber team. Dodgers fans are learning this old lesson in a major way this season.
Torre noted the added speed and talent on this year’s team as one of the reasons that they are were running with Manny up this season as opposed to the red light that runners got when Manny was up last season. Our depth and speed are what keep us afloat and away from losing streaks. They, along with pitching, are good strengths to have.
