Stow witness dies from peanut allergy

Stow remains in critical condition at a SF hospital. One of the men who was hanging out with Bryan Stow on the day he was beaten to a pulp has died.

According to the L.A. Times, 26-year old Matthew Lee ate a salad that contained nuts on Sunday and died just hours later.

It's a major setback in the case, but the D.A.'s office says they have all the physical evidence they need to support their case and put the two thugs charged in the case -- Louie Sanchez and Marvin Norwood -- behind bars.

Lee was with Stow and a couple of other friends down at Dodger Stadium on Opening Night, March 31 -- a game that was televised on ESPN and where a plane was rented that flew a banner over the ballpark that read, "SF Giants 2010 Champs."

According to The Times, Norwood and Sanchez (who were decked out in Dodgers gear) approached Stow and his buddies as they were leaving the game and started pushing and shoving them. The Santa Clara paramedic and his friends walked away, only to be accosted and assaulted minutes later outside the stadium, according to court documents filed on Monday.

The court docs go on to say that Stow looked at Norwood, then Sanchez punched Stow in the side of the face.

Stow's friends, who are paramedics, describe that Stow immediately lost consciousness and fell sideways to the ground without breaking his fall," the DA said in the document. "When Stow's head hit the ground, witnesses heard his head impact the concrete and saw it bounce. Defendant Sanchez then kicked the unconscious Stow several times in the head. Defendant Norwood also approached Stow and kicked him.''

Norwood then stood over Stow's body and screamed, "Who else wants to fight?"

During a search of Norwood's home, police recovered a Bushmaster AR-15 carbine rifle and four other weapons. Norwood told the cops that he was holding the guns for Sanchez because his buddy couldn;t keep the guns at his parents' house, where he was living. Authorities -- who monitored Sanchez's conversations in jail -- say he claimed responsibility for the guns.

According to the D.A.'s office, Sanchez and Norwood have both been charged with assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury, battery with serious bodily injury, and simple mayhem -- all felonies. Sanchez has also been charged with two misdemeanor counts of battery after tormenting other Giants fans at Dodger Stadium earlier in the day.

Arraignment is scheduled for August 10.

The Stow case keeps getting weirder and weirder as the days and weeks go by. I hope for Bryan's sake -- and now Matthew Lee's -- that the jerks responsible for all of this are put away for a long, long time.

Big Inning Dooms Wandy, Astros Lose 5-1

Houston Astros starting pitcher Wandy Rodriguez wipes his brow during the sixth inning of a baseball game against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday, July 17, 2011, in Houston. (AP Photo/Pat Sullivan)

Amidst all of the constant trade rumors throughout last week, Wandy Rodriguez remained an Astro. I was very pleased with his start tonight... until the fifth inning. Wandy was dealing through the first four frames, but he quickly unraveled after that, and the Reds made him pay.

Edgar Renteria's grand slam proved to be the difference, and we couldn't get anything going against Homer Bailey. The local product from La Grange threw eight solid innings, and no one could record a multi-hit performance.

Luis Durango's first major league hit was a RBI single in the fifth, and Jimmy Paredes also singled in his first at-bat tonight.

Carlos Lee's lack of hustle prevented a run in the eighth, but what else is new?

Unfortunately we could see a lot of games like this in the near future with our weak lineup, but there's always a silver lining. Right?

Jarred Cosart threw a gem in his debut with Corpus Christi tonight (6 scoreless innings, 2 hits, 4 strikeouts), and Jonathan Singleton is batting .500 through two games so far with Lancaster. Small samples aside, this immediate return looks promising.
