Atlanta clinched a series win over Washington with a 5-2 victory Thursday night in Atlanta.
Brian McCann opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a two-out home run off Nationals starter Chien-Ming Wang to make it a 1-0 game.
Chipper Jones got into the long ball action in the second inning with a backside home run to left-center field that increased the Braves lead to 2-0.
Atlanta upped its lead again in the fourth inning as Dan Uggla walked with one out and advanced to second on a Jones groundout. Eric Hinske followed with a single to right field that scored Uggla to increase the lead to 3-0.
Washington got on the board finally in the top of the sixth inning as Jayson Werth led off with a huge home run to left field to make it a 3-1 game.
Alex Gonzalez singled with runners on first and third in the bottom of the sixth inning and two outs, scoring Dan Uggla and chasing Wang from the game to make the score 4-1.
The rest after the jump.
After Eric O'Flaherty pitched the seventh inning, Jonny Venters pitched the eight inning and struggled with his control. The Nationals loaded the bases with a single from Johnny Gomes and walks by Werth and Ryan Zimmerman.
Michael Morse grounded to Chipper Jones, but Chipper bobbled it, allowing Gomes to score and cut the lead to 4-2.
Venters escaped the rest of the inning unscathed.
Atlanta added one more run in the bottom of the eighth, as Jason Heyward tripled to right field and scored on a sacrifice fly from Alex Gonzalez. The sac fly gave Atlanta a 5-2 lead.
Craig Kimbrel pitched the ninth inning, recording all three outs via strikeout to seal the win.
WP: Tim Hudson, 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K.
LP. Chien-Ming Wang. 5.2 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 0 K.
Save: Craig Kimbrel (42)

Add to myYahoo!Today marks the first day Major League rosters convert their 25 man rosters to 40 for the duration of the regular season. For many of these call ups, its their first taste at the Major League level - friends, family, and fans can revel in the enjoyment in seeing the beginning of the future for these hard working rookies.
The expanded rosters can provide to be a valuable tool for teams vying for post season play, but unless the player was on the 25 man active roster before midnight on August 31st, he is not eligible for the post season roster.
The September expansions are as equally important to non-condending teams as they are for the playoff hopeful. Bringing up young talent now, is a great way to alleviate some pressure in the transfer from minors to majors as it give them an early audition for the following season. It can also give front office personal a chance to assess the talent they have in the minors and see how they perform in the role of a Major Leaguer.
On the other hand, many players being called up will be expected to help their teams decrease that *magic number* and push them into the playoffs. For example, with the Yankees currently trailing the Red Sox 1.5 games in the standing, they will look to their prized catching prospect, Jesus Montero, to make his debut (today) and serve as an extra bat on the bench. He would be given a start and mostly some spot AB's and if he's hot, he could take over the role Eric Chavez has held as DH or even lock down a starting postition to carry into the following year.
That being said, the month of September is arguably the most crucial for our teams' farm systems. Friends and family will be filling the ballparks to cheer on the debuts of players everywhere and fans will be anxious to see the talent of their teams come alive in front of their own eyes! To all the fans who's teams are in contention (not mine) congrats and enjoy this last month before the playoffs!
Congrats to all the September call ups!

Add to myYahoo! Not a lot of transactions this week, but expect them to pick up across the entire organization in September.
8/25/11
No transactions.
8/26/11
MLB:
- Huston Street activated from the 15 Day Disabled List.
- Matt Lindstrom activated from the 15 Day Disabled List.
- Josh Roenicke optioned to AAA Colorado Springs and placed on the Reserve List.
- J.C. Romero optioned to AAA Colorado Springs and placed on the Reserve List.
The Rockies saw two important figures return to their bullpen to start off the week. Both Roenicke and Romero were primed for September callups, and Roenicke got to come back a game early, as you'll see later. The most unique part of this story is the option of Romero, who has more than enough service time to refuse an optional assignment. It's rare you see someone optioned to the minors unless the movie is guaranteed (a "free option", or what most people know as "option years". The organization probably went to Romero and explained that they intended to activate Street and Lindstrom, and needed his roster spot. With September coming up, Romero would have a chance to be reactivated, get some late-season playing time if he stayed with us rather than declaring free agency after the option. Better than sitting in free agency for a month to end the season, Romero clearly accepted and should be back as soon as he's eligible. Both Roenicke and Romero were placed on the Reserve list, so no corresponding moves were necessary immediately.
AA:
- Matt McBride placed on the 7 Day Disabled List.
- James Cesario activated from the 7 Day Disabled List.
McBride has already had multiple trips to the DL since coming over from Cleveland in the Ubaldo Jimenez trade. Cesario had spent just over one month on the disabled list.
8/27/11AAA:
- Josh Roenicke activated from the Reserve List.
- J.C. Romero activated from the Reserve List.
- Ryan Rohlinger outrighted to AAA Colorado Springs.
- Andrew Johnston placed on the 7 Day Disabled List.
- Warren Schaeffer placed on the 7 Day Disabled List.
- Blake Johnson placed on the 7 Day Disabled List.
Busy day for the Sky Sox. Roenicke and Romero were activated, with struggling relievers Johnston and Johnson (heh) DL bound, with a left ankle sprain and a right hamstring strain, respectively. Infielder Schaeffer to the DL as well with a right ankle sprain made room to the recently DFA'd Ryan Rohlinger to return to active duty after clearing waivers. Rohlinger does not have the service time or a previous outright to declare free agency now or at the end of the season, meaning Rohlinger is still under contract with us for the 2012 season, as a 2006 draftee.
8/28/11
No transactions.
8/29/11
No transactions.
8/30/11
A+:
- Beau Seabury placed on the 7 Day Disabled List.
- Michael Ramirez assigned to A+ Modesto Nuts from RK Casper Ghosts.
No reason was given for catcher Seabury's trip to the DL, but he hadn't been playing for quite some time. Ramirez had been promoted to Tulsa while Wilin Rosario was at the Futures Game, so a fill-in at a higher level isn't new to him.
8/31/11
MLB:
- Jason Hammel placed on the Paterity List.
- Josh Roenicke recalled from AAA Colorado Springs.
This is a rare transaction, and even some of my more reliable transactions sources aren't sure of the specifics. My understanding is that this is similar to going on the Inactive List as a minor leaguer. I do not know if Hammel is earning service time or not; there are arguments in favor of both. Roenicke had not spent the full 10 days down on assignment, meaning that this move is trated like a DL stint in the sense that a player can be recalled for replacement regardless how long they've been on optional assignment. The Sky Sox did not have time to make a move to fill Roenicke's roster spot. Look for that in next week's edition.
