Add to myYahoo!Michael Kohn will go down as the loser of record in this game, but the reality is that he was merely the beneficiary of an inept offense cobbled together from, mostly, aging or spare parts. As annoyed as I was with the Angels' front office in the offseason, the question one has to ask oneself while all this is going on is why Mark Trumbo even had a chance to ground into two double plays the second day of the regular season.
He wasn't the only one, of course; Erick Aybar also bounced into a twofer, and thus the entirety of the Angels' offense rested on a first-inning solo blast by Howie Kendrick, and a fine pitching outing by Dan Haren went unrewarded. I have not been especially sanguine about Howie over the last year, especially after posting the lowest OBP of his career. Perhaps that's understandable given some of the other distractions going on in his life; he became a new father last year, but regardless, he needs to hit for high average. He's on a one-year deal this year, and I imagine whether the Angels elect to extend him past 2011 — his final year under team control — will be decided by his play this year. I wish him luck, because the team needs every bat it can find. (Coda: I see he has another little one in the house, a son, Tyson, born February 10.)

Add to myYahoo!Los Angeles police are looking for two dip shits who beat and critically injured a San Francisco Giants fan in the Dodger Stadium parking lot after the opening day game Thursday.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Sgt. Sanford Rosenberg said Friday that two thugs in Dodgers clothing followed three men in Giants gear as they walked to their car after last night's 2-1 Dodger victory.
Rosenberg says the attackers yelled slurs against the Giants and began kicking and punching the men.
One victim suffered a head injury and was hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
Rosenberg said his injury is not life-threatening.
Investigators have no suspects' identities and are asking anyone with information on the attack to call police.
if you're going to tonight's game, might be best to pack.

Yeaaaaaaaaaaa!
A perfect way for the first win of the season to end. Kila Ka'aihue is one of the few reasons to care about this team right now, and he just delivered in the most dramatic way possible.
The other good news from tonight is that Jeff Francis turned in a very good start, a 7 IP 1 run allowed performance reminiscent of his days as an above average pitcher for the Rockies. Francis walked just one, avoided too many hits, and even struck out four batters.
The Royals then followed that up with two scoreless innings of relief work (Tejeda and Soria), which set the stage of Ka'aihue's blast. The Spring Training speculation that the Royals might have an effective bullpen, thus far, looks well founded.
But really, tonight is about Kila. That was a Major League Moment.

Add to myYahoo!John Buck came away with the simplest possible assessment of new batterymate Josh Johnson. “He’s good,” Buck said. Buck made an equally strong first impression on the Florida Marlins’ ace. Johnson took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, Buck hit a grand slam in his Florida debut and the Marlins beat the New York Mets [...]

Add to myYahoo! The Mets couldn’t do anything against Josh Johnson for most of the night. They got no-hit into the seventh inning when Willie Harris finally broke up the no-hitter with a double to left center field. The Mets had no offense, as was the case for much of last season. They only managed 4 hits and ... Continue Reading
