Everyone in LA seems to think we have to sign Manny - that Manny is somehow our savior. So I just thought now would be a good time to remind you of a few things which you should know but may have forgotten. In the end, we have to say “Do we really want him?” In Boston and Cleveland Manny was always into something, whether it was turing a routine play into a circus catch (or worse) to sulking to saying he was too hurt so that he could have a day or three off (and NO he wouldn’t pinch hit on off days) to failing to hustle (many times) to having his teammates turn on him to shoving down a 64-year-old team representative. We saw the good Manny, but Manny will be 37 and I GUARANTEE THAT IF WE SIGN MANNY WE WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO SEE THE BAD MANNY, AGAIN. The stuff he has done is not stuff that was done by him as an immature kid. A lot of it was done as a 36-year-old man. He’s not going to change for long. He’s so good (the best RH hitter of this age) that we have to try and sign him for 3 years, but that is IT! Put the offer on the table, Ned: 3 years/$75 million and the offer EXPIRES on 11/22/08 at 12:01 AM. Sign the paper or turn the page. Live by the sword - Die by the sword!Bill Shaiken of the LA TIMES has some interesting tidbits today. I always wonder if the writers hear A and Z and then connect the dots themselves. All I am saying is take it for what it’s worth:
Boras could do one thing to help the Dodgers free up more Manny money, and to put a smile on McCourt’s face: He could broker a deal to get Andruw Jones out of town. He could see if the Atlanta Braves would take him back, or if the Giants or Kansas City Royals would take another shot after bidding on him last winter. The Dodgers would have to authorize Boras to broker a trade, then decide what portion of the $22 million still owed to Jones they would pay. “I can’t say it won’t happen,” Boras said. “I can say there haven’t been any suggestions made to us.”
Interesting concept. We would have to pay a whole bunch of money though. Borass isn’t that good (or bad).
[The Dodgers] plan to submit an immediate bid on Sabathia today.
OK - That’s obvious!
They would like to bring back Rafael Furcal, although they appear more likely to sign Orlando Cabrera to a short-term deal.
Is he just guessing? Stay-tuned…
