Ross, Chipper Help Braves To Fifth Straight Win With
7-5 Victory Over Mets

A power outage on Friday the 13th couldn't stop Atlanta's winning streak, as the Braves defeated the Mets 7-5.

Atlanta's offense built a big lead for Tim Hudson early when Jason Heyward chased home Michael Bourn with an infield hit in the first inning. A pair of walks loaded the bases, but Chris Young couldn't retire David Ross, walking him to force in another run. In the third inning, consecutive hits by Chipper Jones and Freddie Freeman brought Ross to the plate again with two outs, and Ross hammered a three-run shot to give Hudson what looked like a comfortable 5-0 lead.

The Mets, though, responded in a big way, and at the expense of Jack Wilson. David Wright led off the fourth inning with a double and scored on Scott Hairston's one-out double. Kirk Nieuwenheis added a two-run single to cut the lead even further. Josh Thole followed with a single up the middle that Hudson deflected, forcing Wilson to chase after it. In the process of sliding to stop the ball, Wilson dislocated his right pinky and immediately had to leave the game. With no shortstops available, Martin Prado was pressed into duty at the position. Ruben Tejada added an RBI single to cut Atlanta's lead to one.

The night wasn't long for Tim Hudson, who departed after giving up a leadoff hit in the fifth to David Wright and a walk to Ike Davis. Cristhian Martinez bailed him out with a pair of strikeouts and a fly ball out with the bases loaded. Like Hudson, Young's night also ended early when he only lasted three innings.

Chipper Jones added some much-needed insurance in the sixth, belting a solo homer off the debuting Josh Edgin. Freddie Freeman then doubled and later scored on Dan Uggla's RBI single off Ramon Ramirez. Chipper extended his hitting streak to 14 games with his two hits.

Andres Torres singled in a run for the Mets in the eighth, but could draw no closer. Craig Kimbrel struck out the side in the ninth to preserve the win. Martinez earned the win with his scoreless inning of work.

Altogether, Mets pitchers issued 11 walks with 19 three-ball counts. The power outage occurred with two out in the top of the second, causing a 16-minute delay. Braves hitters left 12 runners on base, leaving the bases loaded three times.
