Teixeira Sunday Rumors

From Kevin Kernan:

The Yankees are in this game, make no mistake. The Red Sox are not completely out either, despite owner John Henry's e-mail claiming otherwise. The Yankees, according to multiple industry sources, have had serious conversations with Boras about Teixeira and will continue those talks. They have yet to put their best offer on the table.

Adding Teixeira would help in so many ways. His on-base percentage was .410. Alex Rodriguez led the Yankees with a .392 mark. Teixeira hit 33 home runs. His presence in the lineup would make A-Rod that much more valuable. This is no different than having David Ortiz and Ramirez. Ortiz has not been the same without Manny.

Teixeira is younger than Manny and offers two big advantages, his defense at first and he's a power-oriented switch-hitter.

Think of the success the Yankees had when they had Bernie Williams in such a role. Older fans can think back to the success of switch-hitter Mickey Mantle anchoring the lineup. A power switch-hitter gives a manager so many more options. During his prime, Jorge Posada offered much in that department.

Also, Kat O'Brien explains that Scott Boras is trying to bring the Yankees into the bidding, and their front office is divided.

And Dan Grazino says Teixeira is "as on-board with the Boras plan as any client he's ever had besides his ultimate client, Alex Rodriguez." Stan McNeal offers a Boras translation machine at Sporting News.

UPDATE: 1:56 pm: Buster Olney heard that the Yankees did make an offer to Tex at some point, but it's now off the table. He also spoke to someone who talked to a member of the Nationals' front office. The word is that the Nationals "absolutely do not expect to win the bidding for Teixeira."

UPDATE: 5:15pm: According to Ken Rosenthal, the Angels withdrew their offer to Teixeira. He says the Angels' decision "appears more final" than Boston's "not going to be a factor" statement. Rosenthal believes the Angels offered around $160MM over eight years, but Tex wants to be on the East Coast. Tim Brown says the Halos will not re-enter the bidding for Teixeira.

UPDATE: 6:02pm: Brown, who seemingly had the Angels' withdrawn offer scoop first, has more. He says Arte Moreno decided that Tex did not intend to play for the Angels and were being used to drive up the price.

Brown also learned that the Red Sox have not spoken to Boras since Thursday night.

UPDATE: 6:18pm: The Angels confirmed to Mike DiGiovanna that they've pulled their offer and are no longer pursuing Teixeira.
