Chen Awful, Game Lost Before It Really Got Started

Following a rain-out on Saturday, the Royals had a chance to pull two games ahead of the last place Twins and pull their winning percentage up to .333. Chew on that sentence for a second. Depressed yet?

Shockingly, the six earned runs the Twins scored off of Bruce Chen in his 2.2 IP. It took Chen 62 pitches to record eight outs, allowing six hits, two walks, and striking out only one en route to his shortest outing as a starter in a Royals uniform. The defense behind him wasn't sterling, but at no point in his 45-pitch first inning did it appear as though Chen was close to getting out of that inning.

This game was analogous to this entire season: dead before it ever really got started.

In an attempt to try to pry something positive out of this dismal game, Moustakas hung dong and is quietly easing much of the concern that some had as to whether he would be able to be above average. He is now hitting .315/.405/.534 (hand-calculated, so possibly wrong), and his defense has been passing the eye test.
